Tap the cog to bring up the Settings.
Change the theme, setup for left handed Mode, change default text settings, default paper.

Autosync: Synchronise your notes automatically to the cloud. For example, if you have a Dropbox account, you can use this setting to automatically synchronise each note to a folder in your Dropbox account.

Tap the autosync button and select the cloud service you want to use. See Cloud Services for more information. Getting an account for box, google drive and dropbox is free and only required an email address. Setup you account first - before setting up the autosync options.

In this example, I have selected Dropbox. I then select the subject folders for the notes I want to synchronise.

You can create folders in which to store your notes.
First, decide on a Category - the broad overall container for a set of notes. iPad Beginner is the category in this example. The other folders are filed inside the Category and are called the Subjects (Think of them also as topics). Settings, The Keyboard and Using Safari are filed within the Category.
Notes are filed inside the Subject folder. Here, there are two notes in the Keyboard Folder.

Here the Category folder has been closed. Tapping on it will close it. All subjects and the notes stored inside the Subjects folder are also not visible.
On the folder icon, it tells you there are 3 folders in this Category.

Tap the + button to add either a new Category or Subject.

1. Tap the Category button.
2. Type the Category Name, then tap Done on the keyboard.

Tap the Category folder where you want the Subject to be filed. In this example, I want the Subject folder - Sharing files to be stored inside the Category folder - iPad Advanced.
1. Tap the + button.
2. Tap the Subject button.
3. Type the Subject Name then tap Done on the keyboard.

iPad Advanced is the Category. The Subject: Sharing files is stored inside the Category folder.
To add a new note that will be stored inside the Sharing files Subject folder, tap: Create New Note.

To format your folder, tap the Edit button.

You can change the colours of your folders, password protect them, and assign them a different icon or delete them.

4. Tap the Settings wheel to bring up the options.
5. Tap and hold to edit the name of the folder.
6. Sort Folders - by Name, Modified Date, Created Date, Size, Exported.

Here, the Subject folder: Sharing files has been changed to a lilac colour, assigned a new icon and password protected.

Tapping the folder which has a password will bring up the keyboard where you can enter the password to open the folder.
Note the padlock - this folder is currently locked.

While you are in the Edit mode, you can move the folders. Tap the horizontal handles amd move a folder up / down.

Tap Done when you have finished editing the folders.

Create a new note

Create a new note

1. Tap the folder where you want the note to be created. In this example, the note will be created within the Sharing Files subject folder.

2. Tap the Create New Note button to create the note.

1. Curent note title. The default is always the current date. Tap to change the title.
2. Current folder in which the note is stored.
3. Current date and time the note was created. Useful if you want to search for notes by Date Created.
4. Tap to start audio recording a note. Download some instructions for audio recording notes in Notability.
5. Tap for the wristguard. This stops you from accidentally writing a note or making some marks with your wrist.
6. Brings up the handrwiting box. This allows you to write notes with your finger or stylus more precisely.

1. Back to the menu of folders.

2. Share the note. Send the note to another destination. For example, the note will be stored within the Sharing Files folder in Notability BUT I can also share the note to a cloud service like Dropbox or Google Drive or open it in another app.

3. Undo button.

4. Note taking mode: Typed note, handwritten, highlight, eraser, cut a section of your note.

5. Adding things into the note like a photo from your camera roll, take a photo, a web page or web clip, a sticky note, or a figure.

6. The Wrench. Change the paper of your note: different textures, colours, lined and unlined. Help functions are also here.

7. Multipage view. If your note goes over several pages, you can select the different pages here - rather than using two fingers to scroll through the note. you can slo bookmark single pages and search for them here.

A new note has been created: renamed to 'How to share your files on an iPad' and filed within the subject folder: Sharing Files. This folder is also password protected. The Sharing Files Subject folder is alo stored within the Category: iPad Advanced.

Import a document or pdf into Notability to edit and annotate

Import a document or pdf into Notability to edit and annotate

You can import a document from a cloud service to annotate. It can bea .pdf document or even a WORD .docx document. Word documents are converted to .pdf in Google Drive before being imported.

Remember: the document will be imported into the current open folder. Change folders first if required.

Tap Google Drive which will connect you to your Google Drive account (sign in with your account user name / password)
Select a file and it will be imported into Notability: Select the options - create new note, add to other note. Import all the .pdf document or select the pages you want to import and then tap OK.

You can then use the notetaking toolbar to edit, highlight, type notes, add handwitten notes - whatever you want.

2. Select the note you want to move. Tap and hold the note and drag it to another folder

To delete a note or a folder, swipe across the note from right to left. Tap the Delete button.

You can also tap the Edit button, tap the note and then tap the Trashcan.
